Older CNC Machinery

Taig Toolchange
Experimental means of changing cutting tools. Two right-angle pneumatic die-grinders are mounted back to back on the 5th axis, enabling the tool to be changed by rotating the 5th axis 180 degrees. A router is mounted horizontally for roughing cuts on cylyndrical objects held in the 4th axis.

.
Above: Taig Mill, purchased as a manual version, but later converted to CNC.
The rotary axis ( 4th axis ) was added by the addition of a surplus wormwheel and screw, some bearings and aluminium offcuts to a spare Taig headstock.

A cheap variable speed router with a 6mm collet takes readily available disposable milling cutters or engraving cutter via an adapter.

Motors and driver circuits for the mill were 'borrowed' from the earlier lathe conversion below.

Taig / Peatol Lathe converted to CNC operation

Below are some pictures of our first Taig lathe and its conversion to CNC, although it's now back to a manual lathe and all CNC work is done on the Taig Mill.
One of the pictures shows an early test of a design around an aluminium bar using a flexible shaft dental drill.
Drive was via stepper motors and Alzanti PVP134 unipolar drivers.
Software control was under Windows via Master5CNC
