Sgian Dubh Handles

Design

Rab has developed a few styles that he feels work well for a traditional styled Sgian Dubh.

Below are some of the most popular.

Wood

We have a small selection of different woods that we work with to create our Sgian Dubh handles.

  • Fenland Bog Oak is our most popular choice, near black in colour and carbon dated to around 5300 years old.

  • Culloden Bog Oak from a farm in the Culloden area near Inverness, carbon dated to around 4200 years old (there is only very limited quantity of this).

  • Scottish Highland Oak from a very old Oak tree that sadly blew down in a gale many years ago on our family farm.

  • Whisky Cask we often use wood from whisky barrel staves, even going so far as to visit distilleries and diligently sampling the whisky first!

  • Ebony & African Blackwood sourced from makers of bagpipes and other musical instruments, using the offcuts that are too small for them.

Finishing Touches

Rab has developed an oiled and lightly waxed finish for the wood to give a traditional natural look and feel.

Pins (optional)

  • Some of our handle designs are suitable for pins to be set into the cross-over points of the design.

  • We don't usually put pins on the back of the handle for the sake of comfort when being worn, however if you would like them all around the handle please just let us know.

  • If this is something you would like for your Sgian Dubh, then please feel free to ask which of our designs are suitable for pins.
